Students who miss class due to the wilderness retreat are exempt from this assignment.
There's an acting company called The Reduced Shakespeare Company that has made A LOT of money with a production called The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged), that parodies in one way or another, each of Shakespeare's thirty-six plays, including Hamlet.
Today, we'll look at a filmed performance of the play up to the point where they take on Hamlet (no sense in spoilers this early on in our reading).
Viewing can be done on YouTube.
The first part:

And the second part (you can stop at the point when Reed announces the intermission):
The Reduced Shakespeare Company - The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) (2002) Part 2

At any point in the viewing, respond to the following:
- What does this production assume is true about the audience they're performing for (this includes you, btw)? Or, to put it another way, how is it possible for an audience to "get" the jokes in the performance?
- At one point in the production, Adam Long notes that they think Shakespeare's tragedies are funnier than his comedies. What do you suppose makes this so?
- Write a brief review of the performance. Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?
N.B. The actors' names are Adam Long (guy who plays most of the female roles), Reed Martin (tall bald guy), and Austin Tichenor (curly haired guy).
