Douglass' NOTL is written and published in the context of what the editors of your anthologies call "Age of Revolutions in Europe and the Americas" and "Crossroads of Empire." It is also an early-modern work of literature (full-on modernism is a 20th century phenomenon).
We'll be sampling the zeitgeist of the 19th century through the readings below.
Please read the selections assigned to the group you are in. You may find it helpful to read the introductions to the works.
Group 1 should read the following in your anthologies:
- "Married Life" pp. 509-514
- "Letter to Major von Wissmann" pp.517-518
- "The Rights of Women" pp. 24-28
- "Liberty or Death" pp. 36-38
Group 2 should read the following in your anthologies:
- "Reply of a South American to a Gentleman of This Island" pp. 43-48
- "Legal Rights" pp. 514-516
- "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen" pp. 21-23
- "Declaration of Sentiments" pp. 49-51
As you read, consider the way(s) in which the pieces are similar to Douglass' NOTL,
After completing the readings, do the following:
- Create a Google Slide deck.
- You'll create two slides for each piece (8 total slides).
- The first slide should include
- The title and author of the piece.
- A description--in your own words--of the context of the piece. You'll find this in the introductions to each work.
- The second slide should include
- A quotation from the piece that expresses something similar to what you see in Douglass' NOTL (remember to include and parenthetical citation with the page number[s].)
- A 3-5 sentence explanation of the kinship between this author/work and Douglass' NOTL.
- The first slide should include
